A Lack Of Maternity Health Insurance Can Be A Really Maddening Situation

By Alvaro T. Knott

I have been feeling so deeply frustrated because I have not been able to acquire maternity health insurance. The best news I ever got was last year when my wife informed me that she was with child. When this occurred, I was self-employed doing contract work as a graphic artist. I know it's dumb, but we haven't had insurance since graduation because we could simply not afford it This was an unplanned pregnancy, but all the same, we wanted a baby and we couldn't have been happier at the good news.

And from the get go, we struggled with the knowledge that we did not have insurance. The words, pre-existing condition popped up in our thoughts every time that we discussed getting ourselves some insurance. But we had no clue where we might find the appropriate information. My wife proposed that we look for private health plans online, but we were not sure where to find reputable websites or how to find plans that offered maternity health insurance.

There were some insurance plans available, but the deductibles were terribly high and they looked mostly untrustworthy. It was really rather hard to figure out what the next step would be, so we decided to ask doctor friend for his advice, which was that we could make a deal with a hospital. This meant a flat rate for labor and delivery, but if there were any complications, we would be forced to possibly pay thousands and thousands of dollars extra.

It was a tough situation, and we did not have a lot of friends to go to for advice. There was a woman who lived down the street who we knew had had issues finding infertility insurance, but even she did not know what we could do. After a lot of time and trials, we were able to locate a legitimate website that provided great information that helped us differentiate between insurance plans.

It's months later now, and we have a beautiful baby girl. We're very happy with our small family, and we only wish that we could have had the resources beforehand to figure out what to do and how to do it. Because insurance is such a tough thing to wrap your mind around, the ideal solution is for improved information distribution. While I clasp my new baby, I can't help but believe that other people in the future might benefit from a revised means of buying insurance.
